World War I "The Great War Ends"

ARMISTICE DAY

NOVEMBER 11, 1919-1953

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

President Woodrow Wilson Proclaiming Armistice Day as November 11

November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Today, we remember the heroism of those who died in the field, towns, villages far away fighting those who desired to conquer and control others.  We remember those who are with us:  Marines, Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard men and women who defend our shores from those who attack us and seek to harm us.

President Wilson called this day an opportunity for us to show our support for peace and justice in the world.  As we all know, the peace did not last long for another great World War erupted in 1938 and for seven long years, our men and women served again in far away battles to defend our world against aggression and tyranny.  On May 8, 1945, Germany again surrendered.  On August 15, 1945, the victory over Japan was proclaimed.

VETERANS DAY
1954-PRESENT DAY

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the law changing November 11 from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.  Veterans Day became the day to honor American Veterans from all wars.

Today, we honor the patriotic men and women who have served and are serving our country because they love this country and are willing to sacrifice for the common good.

I could write many words to fill this blog today about peace, justice, and the desire for world peace, but that is not what this day is about.  Today, we honor the men and women who have answered the call of their country.  Below is a piece I did not write, but it states what our Veterans have done for all us.  To all Veterans, we say "THANK YOU".
